London Sinfonietta: Spectralisms
Spectral (or “liminal”) music was first formulated in theoretical terms by Tristan Murail and Roger Tessier, the founders of the French new music ensemble L’Itineraire in the 1970s. Now associated too with the music of composers such as György Ligeti, Gérard Grisey, Marc André, Georg Friedrich Haas and Kaija Saariaho, Spectralism describes the process by which a detailed analysis of a given sound forms the starting point for composition, with significant implications for the work’s timbre, harmony and temporal quality. In this concert, one of the centrepieces of the international conference hosted by the Faculty of Music this week, the London Sinfonietta, conducted by Jonathan Berman, presents a compelling programme of spectral compositions featuring the music of Tristan Murail, interleaved with spoken introductions from composers and players. This event was part of 'Spectralisms', an international conference organised by the Faculty of Music, University of Oxford on 15–16 March 2017.
