Battels and Fees
We use the traditional term 'Battels' for College bills covering domestic and other charges that are the student's personal responsibility and that are not included in approved course fees. Your battels bills are issued at the beginning of each term.
Grants and Bursaries
We provide a huge range of bursaries, grants and prizes that may benefit you as an undergraduate and graduate student. If one or more of these would help you with your personal or study circumstances, we encourage you to apply.
Grants to apply for via the College's Support and Grants Committee
Applications for these are considered by the Support and Grants Committee, which meets in Week 3 of each term, and comprises the Senior Tutor, the Dean, the Tutor for Graduates, the Bursar and the Accountant.
Applications are open termly from Friday morning of Week -2 to midnight on Monday of Week 2.
Travel for Research and Study Grants
Grants to claim
These grants are available to all students on receipt of an application form.
- £50 per year for a fast-track language course at the Oxford University Language Centre.
- Payment is made when the course is completed.
- Students must provide a rationale related to their academic work.
- Reimbursement forms available from the Oxford University Language Centre.
Financial assistance
Applications for funding for financial assistance may be made by undergraduate or graduate students at any time.
Completed application forms should be sent to the Bursar who will review your case and may arrange a meeting to discuss your needs.

Subject-specific grants for undergraduates
Classics: Christina Keith and Mary Burn Fund
- Grants are conventionally made to classicists (including those in joint schools) for travel relevant to their studies.
- The donor wished it to be used for a student “most likely to profit thereby”.
English: Rosalind Jane Bairstow Bursary (for activities after you graduate)
History: Hildegard Prize (for activities after you graduate)
Subject-specific grants for graduate students
Clinical Medicine: Jane Mellanby Fund
- Provides £500 for Clinical Medicine students' electives and travel funding.
- Apply via the Travel for Research and Study Grant form.
- For graduate students in the Humanities to complete research and undertake travel to support their studies.
- Currently awards two grants of up to £500 each Hilary term.
- Recipients are required to write a short report detailing how the funds were used.

Non-academic grants and awards
- Music students may claim grants of up to £220 per term (excluding travel) for music tuition lessons. There is no application form. For reimbursement, students should forward receipts to the Accounts Office. Receipts must be received during the academic year in which the expenses were incurred.
- Music Scholars (awarded annually in October) receive £100 and may also claim up to £300 for music tuition lessons. If the Scholar is a Music student, this is additional to the Music Grant above.
Visitor’s Fund for Performing Arts
- To facilitate the performance by students of St Hilda’s College in the Performing Arts with small grants to assist them with presenting plays in College with a significant majority of St Hilda’s students (through the St Hilda’s Drama Society); the making, production and performance of films at St Hilda’s by St Hilda’s students; the discussion about, and production of dance performances in the JdP; the purchase of personal musical instruments for those on bursaries or with demonstrated financial need.
Blues Awards for Varsity Match Selection
- St Hilda’s students are invited to apply for an award from the Almond Seed Fund to recognise their selection and participation in Varsity teams in the current academic year. An award of £200 is made for a Blue and £150 for a Half-Blue.
- Applications should be made as soon as you have received written evidence of the award of a Blue or Half-Blue, to the Principal’s PA, enclosing details of the sport, team, year, a copy of your Blue or Half-Blue certificate and the outcome of the varsity match.
