‘Like as the Lute Delights’
John Dowland & John Danyel
Lute Songs, Solos and Duets
`A Tour de Force of sound and colour’ is how Early Music News described Sirinu’s debut tour of Spanish sixteenth-century music The Frozen Jewel of Potosi.
In Like as the Lute Delights Sirinu turn their attention to the contrasting songs and instrumental music of English Golden Age court composers John Danyel and John Dowland. John Danyel’s exquisite and highly inventive pieces provide a remarkable contrast to the emotional melancholy of John Dowland’s strophic songs, with each composer justly famous in their own way.
Sirinu has performed together for over 20 years in broadcasts, recordings and concerts of early music in venues from Europe, to North Africa, to South America. Their many European radio broadcasts and CDs include All Goodly Sports – the complete works of Henry Vlll (Chandos), The Man Hurdy-gurdy and Me - new works for early instruments (Métier), The Cradle of the Renaissance (Hyperion) – Italian music of the sixteenth century and Bold, Fearless and Rash (EML) – music from the Burgundian Courts. They have been recent recipients of a Continuo Foundation award to tour music from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
