IMPORTANT UPDATE:
The JdP Music Building is saddened to hear of the death, on the 27th December, of the remarkable pianist Jonathan Powell. Jonathan was a featured artist in the JdP Concert Series for nearly 15 years. Jonathan gave some truly unique and unforgettable performances of a great range of repertoire: Alkan’s ’Symphony’, Albeniz’s ‘Iberia’, Messiaen’s ‘Vinqt Regards’, the complete Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues, Stockhausen, Xenakis, a host of contemporary works, as well as two recitals of the complete Scriabin Sonatas. He also made many commercial recordings in our venue, including the CD set of Sorabji’s 'Sequencia Cyclica' which won Jonathan a Deutsche Schallplattenpreis in 2020.

Paul Janes has very kindly agreed to perform in this concert which will be held in Jonathan’s memory. A tribute to Jonathan will be played at the end of the concert.

The JdP will be holding a concert for Jonathan Powell in memoriam later this term to celebrate him and his exceptional achievements. We will update our website when more details are confirmed.

Strauss: Violin Sonata in Eb, op. 18 (1888)
Ravel: Sonate posthume in A minor, M.12 (1897)
Debussy: Violin Sonata in G minor, L148 (1917)
Elgar: Violin Sonata in E minor, op. 82 (1918)

Following his extraordinary concert of Schubert, Ravel and Rimsky-Korsakov with OUO last year, the great French conductor and violinist Rémy Ballot returns to Oxford to deliver two further concerts exploring the music of Richard Strauss. In the first concert with Jonathan Powell, Strauss’s early Violin Sonata is heard alongside music by his contemporaries, Ravel, Debussy and Elgar.
