7.30pm, concert with Villiers Quartet with Emmanuel Sowicz
Judith Weir: String Quartet no. 1 (1990)
Boccherini: Guitar Quintet no. 4 in D major, G.448 (1798)
Schubert: String Quartet in G major, K. 887 (1826)
In their second concert series this year, the Villiers Quartet plays Schubert’s monumental last quartet, which is arguably his most ambitious chamber music both structurally and harmonically, featuring daring shifts between major and minor modes that are strongly reminiscent of the same composer’s songs. The first half of the concert features Boccherini’s Fourth Guitar Quintet, most famous for its Fandango movement: as well as Judith Weir’s first string quartet, which is also based on three songs – two based on Spanish romances and the third on Scottish poetry.
