Exploring Mark Morris's L'Allegro, Il Penseroso ed Il Moderato
Lecture given by Professor Stephanie Jordan (University of Roehampton).
This DANSOX event celebrated the choreographer Mark Morris's iconic 1988 dance piece with an interdisciplinary examination of poetry, music, and choreography. The event was well attended and followed by a convivial drinks reception. Margaret Kean (St Hilda's) explored the source material and metrics of Milton's poetry, Jonathan Williams (St Hilda's) talked about Handel and the music, and guest lecturer Stephanie Jordan (Roehampton) analysed and demonstrated the structure of choreography and showed extensive footage, which can be seen in the video below. A lively discussion followed in which everyone agreed that learning about the individual component arts that went to make up this piece led to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the work.
