Contemporary Opera at the JdP

Since 2005, students of the Opera and Music Theatre course directed by Professor Martyn Harry have created a number of cutting-edge productions of works by Berio, Wishart, Kagel and Cage, as well as the memorable world premieres of Chris Garrard’s A Handmaid’s Tale in 2013 and Toby Young’s Witch in 2017. In January we hosted a new opera as part of this course, The Beginning of an Idea, adapted from the short story by John McGahern, and we are fortunate enough to have a new performance of Marilyn Forever (by Gavin Bryars) next term, which will be the inaugural production by the Oxford Contemporary Opera Society and the UK premiere of the opera. Directed by Zerlina Vulliamy and conducted by Charlotte Corderoy, the opera will feature some of the finest performers in Oxford.

The JdP regularly showcases some of the brightest contemporary opera talent Oxford has to offer and is always looking to host inventive and experimental new music theatre projects. We are excited about our new full-length drapes and our state-of-the-art video and audio setup, which will allow us to create even more ambitious projects in opera in the future... watch this space for more!
