We are delighted to share that Dr Sebastian Wedler’s first monograph, Anton Webern at the Dawn of Modernism, is published today by Cambridge University Press.
This study offers the first book-length account of Webern’s tonal music, revealing the rich and multifaceted ways in which the young composer engaged with, and sought to shape, the cultural discourses of fin-de-siècle modernism—long before he embarked on his celebrated “path” to the New Music.
Dr Wedler, now Assistant Professor of Musicology at Utrecht University, was a Junior Research Fellow at St Hilda’s College from 2016 to 2019.
Reflecting on the book’s journey, he commented: “The College played a major role in making this book possible, and I will always be grateful for all the wonderful opportunities St Hilda's has provided me.”
